Singaporean or Malaysian?

S, a Malaysian friend, and I attended a seminar today. At the end of it, she introduced me to her friend, J. J is a beautiful Indian national from Mumbai and she used to work as an air stewardess for Singapore Airlines. She's now doing a MA at SOAS.

"Are you Singaporean?" J asked me.

"How did you know? S told you?"

"Oh, I guessed from your accent while you were speaking with S."

"Wow. You're sharp!"

"So did you enjoy flying around with SIA?"

"Yes, it was lovely!"

"What kind of passengers are the most difficult to serve?"

"Singaporeans. They are the most demanding."

Awkward pause.

"Erm...... why am I not surprised?" I quickly pointed to another friend sitting in one corner.

"See that guy over there?"

"Yes?" J asked.

"Singaporean or Malaysian?"

"Singaporean."

"Ha! Wrong! He's Malaysian! Come, let me introduce you to him."

"T, this is J."

T stood up from his seat and shook hands warmly with J.

"I asked J to guess your nationality. She said 'Singaporean'. But don't worry, just take it as a compliment."
