The Greenery of London

You might have heard of the song by George Gershwin, "A Foggy Day"

A foggy day,
In London town,

It had me low,

And it had me down

It's one of my jazz favourites. And I especially love the renditions by Ella and Billie. But it's also one of the songs that have created a stereotype of London.

Gray, misty and depressing.

And it will only get worse in winter. Some say that a handful Londoners will be so depressed by the weather that they contemplate suicide.

Not quite true actually. I was consoled find that they had large pockets of lush greenery even in the bustling downtown area. When it's balmy, people love to leisurely munch their sandwiches on the grass. I had the lovely opportunity of doing so a few days ago at Coram's Fields, a park near SOAS.

With this greenery and warmth, you'd actually think it's still summer.

By the time you read this, most of the leaves would have yellowed and withered. Autumn is engulfing the city. Here at SOAS, trees are rapidly shedding their leaves in anticipation of winter.

I was worried that I might not to see the autumn sights in Cambridge. So I went there last Saturday! More on that soon.
