On theory

Some humanities and arts students tend to think of theory as some kind of fixed mathematical formula. But this is often not the case. One should observe how theory is used in different social, historical and political contexts, and how scholars use it to the benefit of their research. Rather then being bound by theory like a slave, one should question it, problematise it and transcend it. All the better when your results refute the theory held by many, for that may very well be your personal contribution to academia.
